Motsol

Nasjonal jazzscene / Galleri Vanntårnet
Nesodden

Norwegian duo motsol was established in 2004 and has since then performed on scenes and festivals around the world. Motsol is part of the groundbreaking scene of improvising, young musicians in Norway. With their unusual instrumentation and brave style of playing, they made it to the finals in the prestigious national competition JazzIntro in 2010. They have also established several
co-operations crossing both genres, art forms, and geographical borders. Together or apart Ståle Liavik Solberg and Stine Janvin Motland can be heard with ensembles and musicians like Frode Gjerstad, Circulasione Totale Orchestra, Martin Küchen, David Stackenäs, Håvard Wiik, Fred Lonberg-Holm, The Kitchen Orchestra and DiskJokke, or alone, as solo artists. Both members of motsol have their masters degree in improvised music performance from the Norwegian Academy of Music.

With their unique combination of instruments, motsol creates a raw and unpredictable soundscape where the unconventional rules of their playing shapes the creation of the music. Motsol plays acoustic, if one doesn’t consider Ståle Liavik Solbergs use of vintage electro acoustic instruments or that Stine Janvin Motlands voice sometimes is to be mistaken for a chain saw. The music is freely improvised with references to contemporary classical music, traditional european free improvisation and whatever the duos interest and inspiration are at the moment. Extended techniques, impulses and alterated sounds is highly present in the duos abstract world, which is both open and intense, challenging and inviting.
