The collaboration between Hoff and guitar legend Mike Stern (w/Miles Davis a.o) started in 2006 with the composition ‘Magma’, comissioned by Nordland Music Festival. In 2007 and 2008 the Jan Gunnar Hoff Group toured with Stern in Ukraine and Estonia. In 2008 the CD ‘Magma’ feat. Mike Stern, Mathias Eick, Audun Kleive a.o. was released. January 2013 Hoff & Stern is touring Norway in a new quartet setting with Gard Nilssen (drums) and Ole Morten Vågan (bass).
