AUDUN AUTOMAT
UFLAKS

Om utgivelsen

Audun Automat is a powerhouse quintet comprised of some of the most vital and exciting musicians on the Norwegian jazz scene. The band joyfully transgresses the borders between tradition and innovation and serves up a sometimes raucous, sometimes tender jazz that calls out to the heart and the mind.

‘Uflaks’ is the third release from the band, following ‘Night Creatures’ and ‘Inside the Beehive’, both of which received critical acclaim. The title, meaning ‘bad luck’ in Norwegian, is a reflection on the possibilities unleashed by the unexpected – a celebration of the beauty to be found in small accidents, both in music and in life.

Bassist, composer, and bandleader Audun Ellingsen elaborates on this theme:
«With this album, we aimed to illustrate the parallels between life’s quirks and the unpredictable nature of jazz, where the unexpected becomes a source of inspiration. This idea resonates not only in the improvisations but also in the compositions, which feature unison melodies that waver between unity and disintegration, harmonies that flirt with discord, and rhythms that at times playfully defy alignment.”

Audun Ellingsen has been working on the Norwegian and international jazz scene since 2002 and has contributed to over 50 albums. He has performed with such renowned musicians as Tomasz Stanko, Bobo Stensson, Kenny Wheeler, Terry Lyne Carrington, Andy Sheppard; he was a founding member of the band Sphinx and is a long-term collaborator with saxophonist Frøy Aagre. He also leads and writes music for the band 1816.

‘Uflaks’ was recorded at Studio Paradiso, Oslo in December 2022 by Marcus Forsgren. Mixed by Ingar Hunskaar. Mastered by Jørgen Træen. All compositions by Audun Ellingsen.
