Young Nordic Jazz Comets

Norsk jazzforum / Dokkhuset
Trondheim

Skarkali trio (Iceland)

Skarkali Trio is a newly formed Icelandic jazz-trio. The members have played together on various occasions/settings after meeting each other at F.Í.H. School of Music. The trio mostly plays compositions by Ingi Bjarni the piano player but with the elegant bass playing of Valdimar and the energetic drumming of Óskar, the music is brought to another level!

The Bárdur Reinert Poulsen Quartet (Faroe Islands)

The Bárður Reinert Poulsen Quartet is a group of musicians from the Faroe Islands and Norway, who met at the Trondheim Jazz Academy. In addition to Bárður himself on bass, the band comprises Simon Olderskog Albertsen on drums, Martin Myhre Olsen on saxofone and Kjetil André Mulelid on the piano. We play music that we like, whether it is loud or quiet, fast or slow, improvised or composed. We hope that you will like it too.

Crunch House (Denmark)

The duo Crunch House is in all its simplicity Emil Savery on Hammond and Jonas Ladegaard on drums.  They have only been playing together for about a year, but already played a significant number of concerts, and they recently won the nationwide Danish music competition for young jazz musicians, Ung Jazz, with a fantastic performance at the finale concert held at Jazzhouse in Copenhagen. With inspiration ranging from everything from Dream Theater, Nirvana over Ligeti, James Brown and Brad Meldau, Crunch House is a melting pot of musical impressions and expressions.

Kadi Quartet (Finland)

KADI QUATET is a modern jazz quartet created by the Estonian-born vocalist Kadi Vija. The quartet’s music is influenced by a variety of musical styles. Band leader Kadi Vija currently studies in the Sibelius Academy, and she has also studied for two semesters in the acclaimed Berklee College of Music. She considers herself as one of the instrumentalists among the band members, and in her solos she constantly tests her limits harmonically, melodically and rhythmically. Quartet’s pianist Mikael Myrskog, also a student in the Sibelius Academy, is a distinguished, experimental and playful soloist. Bassist Pasi Toivanen and drummer Tomi Saikkonen go back a long way and guarantee a strong foundation, where it’s easy to build strong grooves, wistful harmonic colors and everything between them.

Casey Moir Band (Sweden)

CASEY MOIR BAND is a quartet that combines composition with narrative lyrics, wild improvisations, vivid sound landscapes and an intuitive and explosive group interaction. The spontaneous flows out of the composed when together they let go of the conventional to allow space for their integral collective expression to thrive.

Pixel (Norway)

“Reminder” is the debut release by the most exciting band to come out of the insanely active Norwegian jazz scene in recent memory.  Pixel combine the sounds of the classic, piano-less, ‘modern Jazz’ quartet lineup of sax, trumpet, bass and drums (think Ornette Coleman, Gerry Mulligan etc.) with the energy and attitude of indie rock (all of the players are 25 or younger). Led by bassist and vocalist Ellen Andrea Wang, Pixel has been together for 2 years. Also featured are drummer Jon Audun Baar, saxist Harald Lassen and trumpeter Jonas Vemøy. The players are all very active on the Scandinavian jazz scene, as is Pixel themselves. Like similarly forward thinking groups like The Bad Plus, this is definitely jazz, but it’s jazz that rock audiences can relate to, and it has great cross-over potential.
