Alex Ventling & Phelan Burgoyne
The View

Om utgivelsen

After 8 years of collaboration, British drummer and composer, Phelan Burgoyne, and New Zealand rising-star pianist, Alex Ventling, release their long awaited debut album, ‘THE VIEW’ – a culmination of the duo’s musical development in a robust and shining statement. The album presents compositions by both musicians, in a journey through lyrical improvisations, choral-like piano movements, synth empowered grooves and prepared-piano textures. New Zealand trumpet legend, Kim Paterson, features on the track, ‘First Train To Finse’ and the piece ‘In The Mists’ by classical composer Leoš Janáček takes on a new improvisational and textural arrangement.
The rich and percussive interweaving of piano and drums in the intimate duo setting, opens the door to a vast sound-world of possible colours and textures, giving the pair freedom and space to explore and improvise together. The connection built over years of musical friendship is unmistakable in Alex and Phelan’s sensitive interplay together, the result producing music that is clear and honest carrying impressive maturity and humility. The album was recorded in summer 2023 in Trondheim, using Alex’s own historical Steinway & Sons Model S from 1940, and will be released on Trondheim based Sonic Transmission Records on the 15th November 2024.

JAZZPROFILEN
