«Songs for Birds» er Knut Kvifte Nesheims nye verk for mekaniske instrumenter i dialog med et improviserende jazzensemble bestående av Karoline Wallace (vokal/synth), Karl Hjalmar Nyberg (saxofon), Magnus Løvseth (tuba), Martin Miguel Almagro Tonne (el-gitar) og Nesheim selv på trommer og elektronikk.
Prosjektet startet under lockdown i 2020, da Nesheim begynte å utforske gamle mekaniske instrumenter ved Ringve musikkmuseum i Trondheim – som serinetter, spilledåser og selvspillende pianoer. Fascinert av håndverket og den særegne lyden, ønsket han å plassere disse instrumentene i en moderne musikalsk sammenheng.
Nesheim skrev nye melodier for både serinette og spilledåser som han selv programmerte inn på instrumentene. Dette ble så utgangspunkt for komposisjoner for levende musikere, som både etterligner og kontrasterer disse instrumentene på ulike måte. Musikken beveger seg i spenningsfeltet mellom mekanisk presisjon og menneskelig timing, mellom det forhåndsprogrammerte og det improviserte.
«Songs for Birds» is Knut Kvifte Nesheim’s deep dive into the world of old mechanical (self-playing) instruments. The project began during the 2020 lockdown, when Nesheim started exploring old mechanical instruments at the Ringve Music Museum in Trondheim — such as serinettes, music boxes, and self-playing pianos. Fascinated by their craftsmanship and unique sound, he wanted to place these instruments within a modern musical context, and see how he could incorporate them into an extended version of his band from the quartet album Deliverables (2020). Nesheim composed new melodies for both serinettes and music boxes, and even had to learn the almost extinct craft of punching brass tacks onto the programming wheel of the serinette. These meticulously programmed melodies became the basis for a range of different compositions where Nesheims explores how to create new relationships between live musicians and this old technology. Nesheim creates his own distinct mix of jazz and contemporary music, with additional inspiration from baroque ornament techniques and Norwegian traditional music. The ensemble shares many of the same ambiguities, and during the course of the album can be perceived as a chamber ensemble with drums and electric guitar, a jazz combo with tuba and synthesizers, or an indie rock band with saxophone and freely improvised sections.
