Electronic musician John Derek Bishop and
clarinetist Claudio Puntin present RONDO, a new
collaborative album exploring the meeting point
between acoustic wind instruments and live
electronic transformation. The album brings together
two internationally active musicians whose work has
been widely recognized within contemporary and
experimental music: Bishop has released seven
albums on Jazzland Recordings and was nominated for the Norwegian Grammy (Spellemann Prize), while Puntin has released numerous albums on ECM and other leading labels and collaborated with artists and ensembles across the global jazz and contemporary music scene.
Recorded live at Puntin Studio in Berlin in June 2024, RONDO captures a deeply intuitive dialogue between Bishop’s live-sampling electronics and Puntin’s expressive wind instruments. Rather than conventional compositions, the music unfolds through improvisation, listening, and subtle transformations of sound. Acoustic gestures become electronic textures, while electronic layers dissolve back into breath, tone, and space.
The album’s five movements — Distances inside a body, Touching Supernal, Invited where no one has ever been, Touching Subterranean, and Distances outside a body — form a symmetrical structure that explores perception, presence, and spatial awareness through sound. At the core of RONDO lies the idea that when we “zoom in” on a sound, new inner and outer sonic worlds emerge simultaneously. The listener is invited to experience this dual perception as emotion: a space where the familiar and the unknown coexist.
Both musicians share a wide-ranging musical journey and a multicultural artistic background that encourages openness and spontaneity in creation. In RONDO, creation precedes technique; the music arises directly in the moment of interaction. Each sound is treated as a living element that can expand, transform, and reveal new dimensions depending on how closely we listen.
The result is an immersive sonic environment where acoustic breath, electronic resonance, and subtle spatial movement merge into a contemplative listening experience. RONDO explores distances within and around us — above and below ground — forming a constantly shifting sonic landscape that reflects the complexity of human presence.
