Rhizome is the second album by the jazz octet DAMANA and consists of original compositions by Dag Magnus Narvesen. Working with elements from third stream jazz, contemporary composition and classical music, Narvesen explores the multifaceted palett of jazz through a very personal lense. His creative collective of highly skilled and creative musicians balances through the emotive and the powerful, the firm and the playful in this unique and energetic expression.
From the liner notes:
«DAMANA is inspired by the classic instrumentation of a big band. However, I endeavour to paint broader sonic strokes absorbing elements from multiple jazz and orchestral traditions to explore the abundant palette of musical possibilities within the ensemble.
In my experience as a composer, each piece initially reveals an emotive sonority; a stem guiding the development of the composition. This spurs transformative processes that refine the sensibility of each piece whilst holding space for the vast potential of improvisation offered by the masterful ensemble in a performance setting.
I am privileged to be able to realise this music together with some of my favourite musicians, and I hope you will lend us your keen curiosity when listening.
