Since 2020, BEAM SPLITTER (Audrey Chen & Henrik Munkeby Nørstebø) has been organizing DEDICATED PLAY — an ongoing artistic project, concert series, and festival — collaborating with a wide range of artists from around the world, many of them from diasporic backgrounds.
While spinning a thread through the larger story of migration across continents and oceans, and establishing the concept of home in shared relationships, they seek to bring together the commonalities of these experiences, expressing this connection through familial interplay, improvisation, and the merging of sonic languages.
This album features music from Dedicated Play Editions Two and Three, organized at Morphine Raum in Berlin. Over nine evenings in 2022 and 2023, Chen and Nørstebø invited fourteen guest artists, presenting eight new combinations plus a pre-existing quartet with Lønning and Reinertsen. The eighteen short collaborative tracks (nine released as digital bonus tracks) were drawn from these live performances, with no additional overdubs added.
Also included is a longer track: the debut of the imagined Dedicated Play Orchestra. Composed by Nørstebø, the piece uses individual stems extracted from previously unused sections of the concerts, recontextualizing hundreds of short sound files into a dense mesh featuring original material from all the guest artists — all the stuff that was too good to leave behind. This piece is all overdubs, but as with the shorter tracks, all sound treatment was done live by the musicians.
