Lukka Lag
Chambre Séparée

Om utgivelsen

Amidst the incessant covid lockdowns of 2021, three Oslo, Norway-based musicians decided to spend their endlessly superfluous time and energy exploring compositional ideas and group interplay concepts. They had played together for years in other contexts previously, but were intent on establishing a new musical collective for unpractical whims and unrealistic ideas. This closed cohort eventually started going under the name of Lukka Lag, and a snapshot of their work is to be found on the album Chambre Séparée (release August 25th 2025).

For extended periods Lukka Lag met weekly to partake in a joint creative process based around original compositions, where new and unexpected points of departure were given time to mature without hurry. This contrasts with the day to day working life of the band members, where they, being busy freelancers in the jazz scene of the Norwegian capital, rarely have the opportunity to dive unprejudiced into equivalent depth, play with expectations, defy unwritten rules, and turn compositions inside out and back again. The work process has opened possibilities for expansive use of subtle musical ques to navigate the group interplay across the compositions, dynamic pulse and unexpected tempo changes, and greater dialogue – at times erasure of the partition – between composition and interpretation.

Chambre Séparée was recorded at Musikkloftet studio during a June day of 2024, and documents the collaboration which permeates all phases of the trio’s creative process. These 12 musical flights of fancy are complemented by Jan Gunnar Røise´s quirky analogue photographies and Maria Alzamora´s playful cover design, and the result is an album that, in contrast to our ever more AI-dominated and manufactured present, celebrates unlikely outcomes and idiosyncratic expression.
