TEIP TRIO + LENE GRENAGER (NO)

TEIP TRIO is texture and melody, revolving in expanses of empty space, drifting in and out of different rooms.

Tides rise and fall, woodwind and strings merge and dissolve.
Amidst the clamour, a ray of light trembles.

«[…] their interactions are buffered with expanses of empty space – no matter how frantically the woodwind belches or the strings grind, balance is maintained. TEIP TRIO are not the first group to import heavy rock elements into free music, but no one else has found a way to lose the weight without losing the edge.» – Bill Meyer, The Wire

Jens-Jonas Francis Roberts – clarinet
Arne Bredesen – guitar
Nicolas Leirtrø – baryton guitar

Lene Grenager is one of Norwegian improvs most consistent and original voices. Over two decades her instrumental investigations have formed a cornerstone in her ensembles SPUNK and LEMUR, further developed and extended in her solo practice. Her trademark is a unique control of the cello’s timbral possibilities. Parallel to her work with improvisation she has composed music for orchestra, sinfonietta, small ensembles, solo and electronic media. Many of her compositions has been recorded and released on labels such as Aurora, Euridice and Øra, as well as on +3DB. 2018 she was awarded Arne Nordheims composers prize.

NAOKO SAKATA (JP)

Hearing Naoko Sakata play is something else. Her solo album from 2021 «Dancing Spirits» consist of seven improvisations, recorded in Annedalskyrkan in Gothenburg, released on Anna von Hausswolff’s label Pomperipossa Records.

She says «when I sit down in front of the piano, I disappear as a person. My body transfers the music I’m hearing in my head. There are no restrictions to my creation, and I follow no rules as to how the music should be expressed. It’s at the same time something natural and very spiritual, holy and wild, something that exist in a moment in time, and only then, until it disappears forever.».

VAKA (SE/UK/FR)

An exciting joker for our festival! This line-up is so fresh we don’t really know how to describe it yet. They don’t exist on the internet, and we came upon them by chance. Daniel Blumberg played at All Ears last year, a unique and present exploration of Festsalen resulted in one of the most inspiring concerts of the whole festival. After being in touch with Joel Grip (bass) about different constellations, this band suddenly came up, a brand new constellation consisting of long-term bandmates Grip and Gerbal (drums) together with Blumberg and Elvin Brandhi – a new acquaintance on the noise-scene. We can’t wait for this show.

VAKA is an exploding band bringing together four strong personalities from today’s Post-European improvised and experimental music scene. Their music is hypnotic and cathartic, made from spasmodic rhythms and words of mouth. Their uncommon use of hands, feet and voices redefine sound and form through acoustic instruments and electronic machines. A healing dreaming wake of the ill fated tongue. From the knowledge they developed in bands like [Ahmed], Yeah You! and BAHK, they can deploy an ancient and modern music : all at once (now and then).

Originally from Wales, Elvin Brandhi improvises her texts and builds aberrant rhythms from field recordings, tapes, vinyls, instruments and voices.

Daniel Blumberg is a musician from London operating between song form and improvisation, and also a visual artist who draws with silverpoint.

Joel Grip is a fiddler of situations and transforms them instantaneous through sound and the tension they possess. His tone and timing heralds a long history of bass and its resulting movements.

An eclectic musician, Antonin Gerbal has been developing a unique approach to rhythms and sound for ten years, mainly on drums and percussion.

VAKA:
Elvin Brandhi – vocals, field recordings, tapes, vinyls, instruments
Daniel Blumberg – vocals, guitar
Joel Grip – bass
Antonin Gerbal – drums, percussion

MARISA ANDERSON AND JIN WHITE (US/AUS)

“Anderson and White make for sympathetic collaborators, and their first album together glows with ease.” -Pitchfork

Marisa Anderson and Jim White share an abounding appetite for musical exploration. White, as a member of Venom P Stinger, Dirty Three, and Xylouris White, is well known for his creative and idiosyncratic drumming. His singular abilities have also led to collaborations with Cat Power, PJ Harvey, and Bill Callahan among others. Anderson’s prolific output as a solo performer, her mastery of traditional folk and blues forms and her abilities to make them entirely her own has established her as one of the most exciting and forward-thinking guitarists of the last decade.

Their debut duo recording, ‘The Quickening’, consists of ten improvised tracks. They follow their intuitions into musical waves, trance-like moods and rumbles of wooden percussion and electric guitar. The duo’s friendship and shared explorative nature inform their warm and daring improvisations.
